‘Phad kraphao’ didn’t become one of Thailand’s most significant day-to-day dishes for nothing – it’s a flavor you’ll surely cherish with your first bite!
‘Phad’ meaning ‘stir fry’ , ‘Kraphao’ meaning ‘basil’. By origin, it’s meant to be a hot spicy dish with lot of garlic & fresh chillies, but if are not a spice eater; you can always order it ‘less spicy’(say: “phet noy”) or to avoid chillies altogether(say: “mai phet”).
Really, you can order stir fried Thai basil with just about any kind of meat your heart desires – shrimp(‘kung’), squid(‘pla-meuk’), chicken(‘kai’), pork(‘mhoo’), or tofu(‘ta-hu’). Common practice is to order a fried egg on the side and sprinkle chili laced fish sauce on top.
But, you can avoid the egg if you don’t like. Just say ‘Kraphao Kai’ without ‘Khai Dao’ as ‘Khai Dao’ means ‘fried egg’ in Thai.
