Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi Airport receives the H.A.S. award for its toilet hygiene

The Ministry of Public Health has awarded Suvarnabhumi Airport with the HAS award for its standard clean toilets. According to a Ministry of Public Health survey, toilet hygiene is among major factors that determine passengers’ satisfaction when visiting the airport.

Deputy Health Minister Dr. Surawit Konsomboon, who presided over the award presenting ceremony, said that the Ministry of Public Health has launched the campaign to promote clean public toilets across the country since 2005.

The letter H in the HAS stands for health, A for accessibility and S for safety. In addition, the Ministry’s own survey has discovered that more than 80% of the respondents want public toilets to be clean and odor free.

The survey revealed that the 12 following places are most preferred by the Thai people to be kept clean: a government building, an education institution, a hospital, a religious compound, a fresh market, a restaurant, a tourist attraction, a public park, a shopping mall, a gas station, a public restroom and an airport.

22 places have so far received the award since the inception of the campaign. Airports of Thailand President Somchai Sawasdipol said it is essential for Suvarnabhumi Airport to abide by the standard practice of keeping the toilets clean as it is striving for the world’s best airport title.

The AoT has assured the cleanliness of its toilets around the clock and provided toilets for the elderly, people with disability and a diaper changing room for a mother and a baby.

Thailand streets decorated with Jasmine momentos to give away for Mother’s Day

Thai people take this day as an opportunity to thank their dear mother for her unconditional love. Mother’s day morning in Thailand starts by giving alms to the monks. Following the Thai tradition, kids kneel down before their mother to show their love and gratitude. They present her with white jasmine flowers or garlands, in return, mother shower her blessings on kids. On this day, white jasmine flowers are a common sight in Thailand as they are the symbol of maternal love. The white color of the flower symbolizes purity of mother’s true love, which will never change. Charitable activities, donations, offering to monks are also an important part of the day to express child’s love and gratitude towards mother.

Mom’, ‘Maa’, ‘Mae’, or ‘Haha’, the words might be different in different languages but signifies same everywhere: unconditional care, love, concern and sacrifice. The place that a mother holds in child’s heart is same all around the world. The first word that a child learns to speak is mother, whether one is happy or sad, she is the first person to know it all! For a child, her mother always remains the center of attention. She shines like a guiding star, whose trail kid follows. In each country and every culture, mothers are respected for their selfless devotion towards child. Mother’s day is the day to acknowledge her unconditional love, support, and the efforts in raising her kid. This day is celebrated across the globe though on different dates. In most of the countries, this day is celebrated on the second Sunday in the month of May. However, there are countries like Thailand, where mother’s day is celebrated on Twelfth August of every year.

On the day, early in the morning government officials, royal army, students, teachers, gather around high the high tower clock. They form a procession and walk to the king’s palace. On its way to the palace, music band plays popular music pieces. After arrival at King’s palace, the procession presents flowers to the representative of the HM the Queen. It’s followed by song ”Mother of Kingdom’, praising both Queen and King. In the evening ceremony at the Queen’s garden, government officials lit candles. In this way, they pay respect to the Queen and pay for her long life.

DON’T MISS! Massive Perseids Meteor Shower On Saturday Sunday Night: Thailand August 2012

DON’T MISS!
Massive Perseids Meteor Shower On Saturday and Sunday Night: Thailand
The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) invites the public to view the annual Perseids meteor shower and the Moon occulting Jupiter on the night of Mother’s Day, August 12.
Watch the skies on Saturday night
From 11pm till 4:30am
It’s the largest shower of its kind!
NARIT Director Assoc Prof Boonraksa Soonthornthum said on August 12 of every year, astronomical phenomena known as the Moon occulting the planet Jupiter and the Perseids meteor shower can be observed from the night sky.
The crescent Moon will occult Jupiter in the late hours of August 12, at 0.11 degrees north of the planet. The phenomenon will be primarily visible in the South of Thailand, where rain clouds are scarce. The Perseids shower, Assoc Prof Boonraksa said, can be viewed from midnight of August 12 to the early hours of August 13. The shower is the second brightest, next to the Leonids meteor shower. This year, stargazers can expect to see over 100 meteors per hour.Where to look up at the sky ?
In 2012, the peak of the Perseids meteor shower will coincide with a waning crescent moon. This will produce favorable viewing circumstances for observers expecting to get the full effect of this yearly summer experience. With upwards of 80 meteors per hour predicted, it may well be worth staying out to catch quite a few impressive bursts of light streaking through the night sky.
On average, under completely clear skies, and in complete darkness, observers may witness 20 to 80 meteors per hour; but these rates can exceed up to 120 meteors per hour in rural locations. Be aware that local conditions such as light pollution, cloud cover, and precipitation will also play a major role in the number of meteors you are likely to see.
For the best viewing experience, find an area unobstructed by a structure that is far away from city lights. Using optical devices such as binoculars or telescopes is not recommended, as your field of view will be greatly restricted, thus making the possibility of missing a “shooting star” more likely.
Once you have settled down at your observation spot, face half-way up toward the northeastern portion of the sky. Looking northeast, you will have the constellation of Perseus, the radiant of the Perseids shower, within your field of view. Not coincidentally, the Perseids meteor shower is named after the constellation Perseus for the reason that they appear to originate from the sparkling Greek “hero.”
Looking directly up at the sky or into the radiant is not recommended since this is just the point in which they appear to come from. You are more likely to see a trail when looking slightly away from this point. Looking half-way up into the sky will lead to the best show in the house.
Watching a meteor shower is sometimes takes a great deal of patience, but if you wait long enough, you should be rewarded with a an experience that won’t soon be forgotten. Happy gazing!

King Prajadhipok Museum In Bangkok Thailand

It was during the reign of King Prajadipok as King Rama VII that Thailand changed from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy. This museum presents the life and tumultuous times of The Kings reign. The building, constructed in 1906, was initially an imported clothing store called John Simpson Store designed in the Neo-classical style by Charles Beguelin, a French-Swiss architect. It later became a hardware store and then headquarters of the Public Works Department.

Month-long Celebration of Thai Women’s Day in Commemoration of Her Majesty the Queen’s 80th Birthday

Queen_sirikit_2012-80th-birthday

A month-long celebration of Thai Women’s Day will take place throughout August in commemoration of the 80th birthday anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit.

The celebration will be organized jointly by the National Council of Women of Thailand, under the royal patronage of Her Majesty the Queen, public and private organizations, and other women’s groups.

August is an important month for Thai people, as they celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s birthday, August 12, and Thai Women’s Day, 1 August, in honor of Her Majesty, who is recognized as Mother of the Land.

A group of members of the National Council of Women of Thailand met Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and members of the Cabinet on 24 July 2012 to present them with pins showing the logo of Thai Women’s Day. The logo depicts the cattleya “Queen Sirikit” orchid. The year 2012 is also special as it marks the 10th anniversary of the celebration of Thai Women’s Day, coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Her Majesty the Queen’s 80th birthday.

Thai Women’s Day has been celebrated since 2003. The celebration was proposed jointly by the Ministry of Interior, the National Council of Women of Thailand, and women’s groups across the country. The Cabinet approved the designation of the day in July in the same year. The reason is that August 1 usually marks the start of activities carried out to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s birthday. Her Majesty was then asked if she would grant permission for the annual observance of Thai Women’s Day to be in her honor on this occasion.

She assigned Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn to preside over the first celebration of Thai Women’s Day on 1 August 2003 at Ambhorn Gardens, Dusit Palace, in Bangkok. Later, Her Majesty granted permission for the use of the cattleya “Queen Sirikit” orchid as the symbol for Thai Women’s Day. This variety of orchid is one of the flowers bearing the royal name “Queen Sirikit” of Thailand, by Her Majesty’s royal consent.

Her Majesty has given immense support to the cause of Thai women. For instance, she has sponsored programs and organizations providing educational and training opportunities to enable women to improve their economic and social welfare, while enhancing appreciation for their national cultural heritage. Her Majesty’s exceptional leadership in fostering the role of Thai women has received international recognition in the form of awards and honorary degrees from many institutions and organizations. She stressed the duties of Thai women to bring happiness and progress to the family, society, and the country as a whole.
