History -
Wat Pho, the official name being Wat Phra Chetuphon Vimolmangklararm Rajwaramahaviharn, is the first grade royal monastery, regarded as the most important one during the reign of King Rama I of the Chakri Dynasty. The importance of this is due to the King having managed the restoration of Wat Phodharam, an old monastery from the Ayudhya period, and had it re-established as a the royal monastery located near the Grand Palace. Some ashes of King Rama I were also kept under the pedestal of the principal Buddha image known as Phra Buddha Theva Patimakorn in the main chapel.
The monastery is located in an area of 20 acres to the south of the Grand Palace, with Thai Wang road in the north, Sanam Chai road in the east, Setthakan road in the south and Maharat road in the west. Separated by a tall white wall on Chetuphon road, the monastery has two main quarters: the sacred or a chapel section, Buddhavas, and the residential or the monk’s living section, Sangghavas.
It is said in a stone inscription that, after moving to the Grand Palace, King Phra Buddha Yod Fa The Great (King Rama I) recognized that there were 2 old temples along both sides of the Grand Palace: Wat Salak (Wat Mahatart) in the north, and Wat Phodharam in the south. He ordered his noblemen from the department of the Ten Crafts to restore Wat Phodharam in 1788. This first restoration took 7 years 5 months and 28 days. Then there was a celebration in 1801 and the Royal named it “Wat Phra Chetuphon Vimolmangklavas”, which was changed to “Wat Phra Chetuphon Vimolmangklararm” during the reign of King Rama IV.
The great restoration, having taken 16 years and 7 months, was done during the reign of King Rama III, by extending both the South Vihara and West Vihara where the large reclining Buddha image is kept, the Missakawan Park, Phra Mondob (Library Hall) and teaching-learning hall as they are of today. Although there was another restoration before the Bangkok Bicentennial Celebration in 1982, no more other major work has been done on the monastery, except for some minor repairs.

Fruit of the Season – Lamyai – The Bigger, The Better & Sweeter

10616118_10152667997374540_1538134370710154987_n
Fruit of the Season -
Lamyai – The Bigger, The Better & Sweeter

Longans or Lamyai are extremely sweet and juicy and when fully ripe, the skin becomes dry and brittle and very easy to remove. The taste of Longan is very similar to the taste of a lychee, although a fully ripe Longan is somewhat sweeter than a lychee.
The name Longan comes from the Cantonese and means Dragon Eyes and is so called because the black seeds of the Longan can clearly be seen through the translucent flesh and resemble mythical dragon eyes. The fruit is somewhat similar to the Lychee, although in recent years the Longan has become much more popular. The fruiting season is quite short, fruit being available in Thailand during July and August.

The nutritional value of Longan is fairly high, with just a handful of fruit proving the daily recommended dosage of both phosphorous and calcium. A wonderful fruit, sweeter than the lychee, which most Thai people consider to be one of the best locally grown fruits available.
One famous Thai dish which relies upon the Longan to provide flavor is Khao Nieow Lam Yai, a kind of dessert consisting of sticky rice, flavored with coconut and Longan. Alternatively, canned Longan can also be served with ice, as a simple and nutritious dessert which is equally good. Try it!

At the same time, the students experience joy through talking, playing and working with their classmates. This kind of happiness is uncommon for people with special needs.
Painting brings out our students’ imaginations and inner beauty. Even though the imitation, each artwork is a unique melody which, when added to the works of others, creates the glorious symphony that characterizes Na Kittikoon art.
As Na Kittikoon enters our 10th year, our students continue together having fun altogether with enhancing their visual, communication and, most importantly, life skills.

Located in the ideal place for access to the sky train (cheap and easy to use) the main ferry tours for all tourist attractions by the river and local shopping.
The train station is just 3 or 4 minutes walk away with the ferry pier a couple of hundred yards more.

In the shopping area below the hotel you will find a supermarket and food court with a variety of eating venues. All excellent value and quality.
The hotel staff are just fantastic. So polite and helpful you couldn’t fault them.
The choice for breakfast was superb with something for everyone.

As far as the room goes we couldn’t have asked for any better. Superb views of Bangkok and very comfortable indeed.
Lovely pool area, nice gym. Planning to visit again already.”
